Let there be light! White light, 350 lumens of it.
The Petzl Actik Core headlamp can operate with a diffused beam, for tinkering around camp, and a more focused beam for illuminating the distance, plus there’s a handful of red settings. These settings all proved to be logical and easy to activate, with the one-button functionality. The focused beam was particularly strong and impressive; the batteries last two hours with this at full tilt (and seven hours on the standard beam). The headlamp was pleasantly light, but I wouldn’t mind if I could angle the beam a bit more towards my feet.
Headlamps tend to run-off single-use AAA batteries, meaning I end up paranoia-purchasing a new pack every time I head out bush. Not only is this annoying, but bad for the environment. So I was thrilled to be able to recharge the Actik Core’s special battery core through USB port. I topped up the headlamp every day while we were driving between destinations.
Price: $90 to $125
