Nestled within Great Otway National Park, Johanna Beach Campground is a hidden gem, offering a tranquil coastal retreat just three hours drive southwest of Melbourne. As part of a special initiative by Parks Victoria, camping fees are waived at 131 locations until 30 June 2025, including Johanna Beach.
The campground features 25 unpowered sites set in lush surroundings. Ideal for surfing, fishing and swimming, it’s a perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Basic facilities include drop toilets and picnic shelters. Be sure to bring your own water and supplies. Bookings are essential, and you can reserve your spot via the Parks Victoria website.
Red Bluff Campground, Gippsland (Free until 30 June 2025)
Located in the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, Red Bluff Campground is a coastal oasis, approximately three hours east of Melbourne by car. Set along the picturesque shoreline, this campground is perfect for those looking to explore Ninety Mile Beach and nearby Lakes National Park.
Access is via sandy tracks from Longford-Loch Sport Road. It’s suitable for tents, camper trailers and caravans, with unpowered sites and basic amenities, including toilets and barbecue areas. There’s a boat ramp and jetty nearby, and Loch Sport’s amenities — such as a supermarket and pharmacy — are just a short drive away. Bookings are not required.
Green Hill Lake Reserve, Ararat, Central Highlands
Located in the heart of the Central Highlands, Green Hill Lake Reserve offers a free camping experience with a wide range of activities. From fishing for rainbow trout and redfin to canoeing, birdwatching and bushwalking, there’s never a dull moment here. The reserve features both powered and unpowered camping sites suitable for all types of camping rigs, from small swags to large motorhomes.
