When one thinks of summer, the first thing that often comes to mind is the beach — sitting down on the sun-warmed sand and enjoying the cool ocean breezes. But as this list will attest, whether you choose the coast or head further inland, sometimes all you need to truly escape the heat of summer is some shade and water.
Head for the hills in South Australia, a region that packs a punch in terms of historic towns, cool-climate wineries and activities that will keep the kids busy. Less than an hour’s drive from Adelaide, this region of rolling green hills is the best of both worlds come summertime.
Hahndorf remains a popular destination for all who visit the Adelaide Hills, the historic town first founded in 1839 by German migrants. The Discovery Hahndorf Resort is only a short distance from the beautiful town, and with 15 hectares of bushland you are sure to find the perfect powered or unpowered site to kickstart your summer getaway. Other accommodation, such as cabins, units or villas are available. The park offers a range of facilities, including a kids’ playground with jumping pillow, swimming pool, mini-golf and wi-fi.
Compromising amenities for a lower cost, campsites and farm stays can be found throughout the Adelaide Hills. Frank Potts Reserve in Langhorne Creek puts visitors a half-hour drive from the historic towns of Mount Barker and Hahndorf. This campsite is suitable for caravans, campers, tents, has toilet facilities, drinking water and is pet friendly — all with lovely views of vineyards, and a paltry $5 per night honesty fee. And while you’re in the area, escape the heat of summer a different way and stop by one of the many wineries that call these hills their home.
