Plans to offer overnight camping next to Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Qld, are underway following approval of a submission lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council at the start of the year.

The campground proposal, lodged by Australia Zoo, allows for the establishment of 68 bush camps, eight cabins and 32 recreational vehicle sites on a 29ha plot adjoining the zoo.

In a statement to the press issued by the Sunshine Coast Council, Planning and Development Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said the project had been architecturally designed to blend with the site’s natural attributes.

"This carefully considered and ‘custom designed’ project at Beerwah will support the continued expansion of Australia Zoo as an international tourist destination, providing an exceptional range of animal and nature based attractions, experiences and facilities," said Cr Dickson.

Plans on the council website paint an attractive view of the grounds set against bushland with sprawling lawns, a levelled recreation area, a dam and private drive-through access for the proposed RV sites.

Ablution amenities and reception facilities have also been approved in the final submission.

Australia Zoo's Terri Irwin told The Courier Mail that camping at the zoo was "the next natural step".
