When one thinks of summer, the first thing that often comes to mind is the beach — sitting down on the sun-warmed sand and enjoying the cool ocean breezes. But as this list will attest, whether you choose the coast or head further inland, sometimes all you need to truly escape the heat of summer is some shade and water.
A mere 8km from Townsville, Queensland, Magnetic Island offers breathtaking panoramic island and ocean views, pristine beaches and hiking trails that will ensure you spend your summer living outdoors. Magnetic Island is a nature lover’s paradise, and to make matters very simple, it only has one camping spot: Bungalow Bay Koala Village, which also has a wildlife sanctuary on site, making this destination a truly unique spot to add to your summer itinerary.
Bungalow Bay Koala Village is caravan, camper, and tent friendly, and there are bungalow options available, some with ensuites. An unpowered campsite will only set you back $20 per night, or $25 for powered. Book early to secure your spot.
For those after more luxurious options, resorts and luxury beachfront homes can also be booked on Magnetic Island.
Getting to Magnetic Island requires a 20-minute ferry ride. Passenger tickets are available through SeaLink, while Magnetic Island Ferries allows you to transfer your car as well. Cost wise, a ferry ticket for two adults and one car will cost upwards of $210 return, but book directly with Bungalow Bay Koala Village for an accommodation and vehicle ferry package price.
