We know a lot of our readers are keen to support Australian manufacturers, and it's now more important than ever to our spending local to help recover from a tough 2020. It's not always a straight forward decision process if you're looking for an Aussie camper, with many manufacturers touting misleading claims, such as 'designed in Australia'.
In the context of Swag Campers, however, built in Australia means their products are as dinky-di as a flamin' galah. They don't shy away from the fact that, in order to keep prices competitive in a market flooded with imports, they do manufacture some elements in China, but then they go the extra mile to ensure all subsequent components are sourced and installed from and by local brands.
Regular readers will no doubt be familiar with Swag's X13 Explorer, which took out the title of Most Family Friendly Camper at Camper Trailer of the Year 2020. And while it's larger cousin, the new Swag SCT16 may not yet be on your radar, you'll not soon forget it.
At the outset, this hybrid ticks all the right boxes for a rugged family camper. It's got a single piece chassis, Poly-Core walls, 300W of solar and a reverse cycle air con. Swag have done away with the weighty checker-plate armour that has become so common, and opted for a lighter raptor-style body coat finish. This, along with other weight saving decisions, allow the SCT16 to be towed behind vehicles with limited towing capabilities, such as Prados, Raptors and Pajeros.
The external kitchen has a four-burner stove, it plumbed with hot water and has access to fridge and storage slides — there's also a three burner inside if the weather doesn't suit. The 16-footer has room inside for a full ensuite with swivel toilet and plenty of storage. As for sleeping quarters, there's a family layout bunks for kids and a twin for adults, or a couple's option that features a permanent queen-size bed.
It's all tied together with a peppering of top technology and accessories, including Monroe Shocks, NSK/KOYO Bearings, 3 x 100Ah Australian supplied batteries (Lithium Upgrade available), Projecta Intellicharge system, Projecta Sine wave inverter, Truma Gas hot water system, TV, Milanco Antenna and much more.
Swag have also noted that there's a new, slightly shortened SCT13 on the way, which will be well worth checking out.
