Altitude has quietly gone about the business of selling campers for the past two years without any heavy marketing or show presence. Quietly is not exactly the right adjective, though, as the company has been flat-out keeping buyers supplied with its good-value, quality campers.

This is a case of Altitude’s excellent products speaking for themselves and none have done this more clearly than the Pinnacle — the premium softfloor camper in the five-tier Altitude range.

Design & Construction

This family camper is based on a steel-tub body riding on Cruisemaster independent suspension, and is decked out with a softfloor Dynaproof canvas tent. It really packs in a lot of good features, from the simple-but-smart stuff like the folding kitchen prep table that clips easily onto the extended fridge slide, to the massive storage locker up front and clothes storage on the offside.

This is a camper built to head deep into the bush, with its solid chassis, extensive checkerplate tank protection, Hyland offroad coupling and independent Cruisemaster suspension. Wheels are Crossfire alloys shod in Maxxis Bravo A/T in a LT265/75R16 size.

Storage

Loading up for a trip is not hard work with this camper trailer — there is abundant, well thought-out storage provision. The front storage toolbox is built from lightweight, yet strong checkerplate aluminium, and offers a large space that you’d easily get a generator or two into, plus a fair bit of other camping gear.

The nice thing about having a large lockable, weatherproof storage toolbox like this is actually being able to access it — no worries here, with a large, forward-hinged hatch on either side, with automotive rubber dust-sealing around the aperture. There’s a light set-up in the toolbox too, so no need for fumbling about in the dark.

INTERIOR

The kitchen, lot of softfloor campers, swings out from the tailgate, while the Waeco fridge sits on a slide-out drawer. The beauty of this kitchen is its food preparation surfaces — it has loads. The sink/cooker slide becomes an L-shaped bench with an add-on stainless-steel benchtop, while the fridge slide also takes a hook on benchtop, making for a U-shaped kitchen area.

The inside living area is the usual canvas fold-over-the-bed style, but here there’s a nice, tall-pitch roof (Dynaproofed, 15oz on the roof and 11oz on the walls) and lots of meshed window area (with four windows and two zip-up meshed/screened doors). The step up to the bed is solid and durable and you face the comfy innerspring queen size bed.

THE JUDGES’ wrap up

The Altitude Pinnacle is set up perfectly for long-term touring. With loads of water capacity, power and solar to last in the bush, this is a very thorough, well-executed outback camper, perfect for use over extended periods.

This is a trailer more significant for its strength and ability than its innovation. Simplicity is the key here — nothing has been included unnecessarily and the result is an easy-to-use camper.

It’s very solid and has certainly been put through its paces in development, and has excellent ability to cope offroad. With a superb quality of finish, there has been a lot of attention to detail here. This camper ticks so many boxes because you can see that it has a wealth of experience behind it. It would go almost anywhere with ease and comfort. A truly great value proposition.
